I’ve lost all confidence in the 5.9 ECU on my ST4S, I’ve heard so many storys of them failing I want something more reliable. With that in mind I have been offered a 916 wiring loom (Thanks MrR) which will enable me to fit a 1.6M ECU. Here where it gets complicated.
The 1.6M uses one injector per cylinder just like my ST4S BUT it uses a pick up on the Cam “Jackshaft” (I think that’s we British call the half speed shaft?) On the other hand the 1.6B1 uses the crank pick up like my ST4S BUT twin injectors. what I want to know is, are they the same ECU with a different chip, meaning all I need to do is get either and fit a UltiMap UM222 UM 222 Eprom or do I need to be more carefull?
Keef,
PS FFS, has anyone got manifolds for fitting some Dell’Orto and I’ll knock up an adaptor to run a Lucas Rita!!!
Just had a helpful bit of advice from Steve Hillary, which means it is good advice BTW!
The 916 Biposto uses a crank sensor in the same place as the ST4S (although it is a different sensor) and uses a 1.6 ECU, so its game on. Great news this as I’ve only found the 1.6 B ECU in the USA while the 1.6ECU is to be found at not too stupid prices on Ebay in the UK quite easily!
FIM who made the Ultimap UM222 have loooong since gone out of business.
However if you catch John Hackett on a good day he can supply a baseline chip that will be pretty close to “Spot On”, for not too much money.
Steve R
p.s. I’ve got a spare Power Commander PC3 that will fit.
Hmmm. This is all very confusing to me. I just had to go and fiddle with my Bevel to stop the nervous twitch. Avanti have just got back to me about my IAW 5.9M ECU to tell me that he could not find anything wrong with it so that’s it, I reckon it is time to throw in the towel and do this 1.6M thing.
What I need-
1, 916 wiring loom - done (Thanks MrR)
2, 916 1.6M ECU - £120 on ebay
3, Ignition pick up? The 916 Biposto uses a sensor in the same place by the crank, but is a different sensor. Hmmm. Will the ST4S one work with it? I’ll try it first- it has the same plug, and I’ve already got two!
4, Chip. A call to Mr Hackett or the Baines should sort that out, just hope they don’t think I’m mad. Oh hang on the Baines already know the truth!
Come on, what other differences are their between the 916 and 996 ST4S electrics? Injector relays, are they the same? Lets get this bloody thing on the road between us.
What I would like
1, PC3. Do I need this? I can see how it helps racers set up the bikes for a circuit and the conditions, but how will it help me?
The Baines boys used to get their chips from JHP/John Hackett, it’s “rumoured” that the “Hackett” chips are actually copies of the FIM ones…
I couldn’t comment on that, but find it a strange coincidence that both the FIM/Ultimap and JHP chips are encrypted to stop you copying them in exactly the same places???
There is no such thing as a perfect off the shelf chip, the P3C “piggy backs” over the chip/map and allows you to adjust the fueling to get it as near as damn it to spot on.
A “Fuel and Air Ratio” run on the dyno helps here, but it can be done via trial and era.
and always put a bigger main jet in the rear Carb. Sometimes it may be and idea to raise the needle a notch on the rear pot as well. Plus when running 50 grade on a bevel twin it takes 8 mins to warm the oil the correct viscosity although you can check this with the use of a Bevel gazer window. Help meeeeeeeeeeee!!! I am but a simple man…
