Regalia issue ...

I understand that Graham has had a meeting at D UK to discuss the regalia / copyright issue, but I can’t access the email that was sent to the CoM owing to the new Mailwasher / anti-spam system in place (is there a password for the CoM emails???)

If anyone has been able to read the email, please can they send it to me asap, please?

Hi Jilly,

the text of my email below sent Wednesday of last week:

Hello everyone,

I had a telephone conversation with Chris Bushell (DSC) and then Tim Macabee (Ducati UK) today and just wanted to keep everyone up to date.

Chris very kindly offered to keep me abreast of what happened at this week’s World Presidents meeting in Italy.

Ducati’s new marketing director Diego Sgorbati announced that they will be introducing a new accreditation scheme for Ducati clubs worldwide. In simple terms in return for them giving us a DDOC pin, patch and sticker per member each year and a number of places at the WSB dinners they would expect us to hand over all details of our membership database. A number of objections were raised within the meeting at this point regarding the legality of such an arrangement under each country’ data protection laws including the UK.

I believe that our stance as a club in this matter is to raise our concerns regarding such an arrangement. To this end I contacted Tim at Ducati UK to ask to meet with him and the DSC to discus this matter. A meeting is being arranged within the next couple of weeks. It is my understanding that these concerns are shared by many of the Ducati clubs worldwide.

I have also spoken to Tim regarding the issue of regalia sales. Tim confirmed that Ducati Italy had received our response to their initial letter in this matter. However, Tim had requested that Italy did not respond as he felt a series of letters backwards and forwards would not bring the matter to a mutually satisfactory conclusion. I agree with Tim. I have said, on behalf of the club, that we have no intention of going against the wishes of Ducati. All we ask is firstly, that we are allowed time to run down existing stocks of regalia and that secondly we have clarity about what will and will not cause them offence in the future. I have agreed to continue this talk with Tim when I meet with him. I have previously made the DSC fully aware of the situation regarding regalia as they already knew about it and I was keen that the facts of the matter were know to all rather than allowing the possibility of speculation and rumour to hamper our efforts to reach a resolution.

With your permission, I would like to take our stock figures for July 2008 and July 2007 to show Tim how we are running down stocks of those lines we think are causing a problem as proof of our intent and would welcome any other comments. I will also contact Paul J directly to see if he might be available to come to Ducati UK with me.
regards

Hi Graham,

Thank you very much - very well expressed too!

Yes, the ‘wanting our members details in return for badges’ is an old chestnut; some years ago we pointed out the DATA protection Act to Ducati when asked a similar question, the result being that we (Victoria and Keith Marrone and myself!) had the unenviable task of matching the envelopes containing the 1800 DDOC cards to our membership address labels and posting them (we did get the postage refunded from D UK!) Again, it’s something that needs to be discussed at a CoM meeting asap.

Quite agree with you about regalia; between you and Paul you have all the required knowledge to deal with any queries regarding regalia / business issues, and I’m sure that you can reach a satisfactory agreement with Ducati. Please keep me posted, there’s too much speculation and too many rumours going around these days!

ciao,
Jilly

PS Any chance of the updated AAs being sent to me, please? The link doesn’t work on the website.

Yes I agree with what has already been said for the people that know about it to carry on, I also spoke with graham about our mail washer, I do not have a password or anything and whilst I welcome not having as many e-mails I still have to trawl through it to see if I have missed anything but then I can’t get it.

get in touch with Spaggy, he has all the passwords … except for the CoM one! I’ve got the old / original list, finally found it after hunting throgh loads of files, dated 2004! It might be hogemi55, try logging in as PRO then add that as password. If it doesn’t work, then you know who to contact!!!

Under no circumstance should members details be handed over to Ducati!

I also agree that Graham and Paul should carry on with the regalia issue.

Guy

Check out Ducati . com wesite, under the starting a club it is written there that you have to log all members details and send them to Ducati, I know the Scots club got all their moto gp stuff so I can only assume that they have complied with it

Maybe they haven’t heard of the DATA protection Act??? That’s really bad …

My understanding is that to remain compliant with the 1998 Act we would need to contact all our members and ask for their permission in writing to hand their details across to Ducati. It would thus be simpler to put an article in Desmo saying that Ducati would like to have all their details and leave it to individual members to decide if they wish to comply or not by emailing the marketing team in Bologna. Who could argue with that?

sounds an excellent solution - Please can you write the article  ? Am pushed for time this week - have to get Desmo 181 ready for the printers by the 24th, and have got certain reports to re-write already! :frowning:
Or it could go in 182 next year …

Regarding this, it would also be better if the application form contained a tick box to allow us to notify Bologna of members details. I think this would be a legal requirement for us and really should have been done before.

Good iea - something to discuss at CoM meeting

What Com meeting???

The one we should be having …!!! A few of us can make a meeting between now and Christmas, enough to make a quorum anyway. So, all we need is a venue …

Any sugestions for a location and a date?
We could meet in Cornwall, but we wouldn’t get a Quorum!

For me best and fairest place is where every COM meeting I have ever attended Motorcycle museum.

Not necessarily the fairest now, Martyn, there’s a couple more CoM members in the South! Somewhere in the Oxford area is now more central to all.

Best CoM meeting places that I’ve attended were the Committee Rooms at Chesham (nice bright airy room, excellent parking and facilities, easy to get to for the CoM at that time), the pub at Botley, Oxford (next to the river, fab food and drink, easy to get to) and Graham’s house (easy to get to, excellent facilities and superb hosts)
