I am just about to shim the heads on a 78 bevel 900ss. Would any one have information on the end float tolerance on the rockers ? I have read several articles on valve shimming but, none mention the rocker end float, any help would be appreciated. Thanks Gary
Hi Gary,
The 2 different bevel manuals I have just state “no end play” and “The rocker arm must be free to move without any axial clearance”. I don’t have a parts list for the bevels but the parts lists for the belt driven 2 valve engines like the F1 show the thrust washers available in thicknesses of (mm): 0.1 / 0.2 / 0.3 / 0.5 / 1.0 / 2.0.
So I think you can assume that you should be going for a total float of something less than 0.1mm, as long as the rocker is still free to move.
Comments from any Ducati trained technicians welcome!
Cheers
Rob
Hi Rob,
Thanks for your reply .In the end i purchased a few packets of shims and shimmed the rocker so i had 0.05 mm of clearance. The rockers are free moving, and having shimmed the valve clearances i am going to go for a start up this weekend.
Cheers

Sounds good Gary. Let us know how the start-up goes - best of luck. I have a black and gold 1979 900ss, which is pretty much roadworthy, bar the odd fork / bevel tower oil leak.
But this year I also bought a 1976 wire wheeled project, that needs complete engine assembly / wiring etc. So I’ll be following in your footsteps soon…
Cheers
