I am having a heck of a time trying to decode the vin on this ducati 916. Can anyone help?

Only 14 characters? I’ve come across 13-character and 17-character VINs, not 14- tho’.

That looks like the engine number not the VIN?

That definitely look like an engine number
ZDM = Ducati Motor Holdings
916 = engine capacity
W4 = water cooled 4 valve engine
Xxxxxx = sequential serial number of the engine

The VIN is stamped on the headstock, right hand side and in your V5
